What does the study involve?
Regular physical activity has a positive impact on health. In this study, we investigate whether increasing physical activity levels has a positive impact on known health risks associated with LRRK2 or GBA1 genetic variants. By using a motivational smartphone app and a Fitbit research watch, participants will be motivated to integrate more physical activity into their daily lives. Easy-to-use digital technologies are used to conduct the study fully remotely, which means that participants from all over the United States can participate.
Who can participate?
You may participate in this study if you meet the following criteria:
- You are 50 years or older
- You carry a variant in the LRRK2 or GBA1 gene
- You own an iPhone or Android smartphone on which the Slow-SPEED app can be installed. For Apple phones, a minimum of iOS version 15 or newer is required. For Android phones, Android version 9 or newer is required.
- You are able to walk inside the home without the use of a walking aid
- You are not diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disease
- You do not fall more than 3 times per year
What is expected from participants?
The study starts with a four-week period in which we measure your current physical activity levels and determine if you are eligible for study participation. Your physical activity levels will be measured with a Fitbit research watch. If you are eligible, you will gain access to the Slow-SPEED smartphone app. This app uses gamification principles to increase the number of steps you take and the time that you are active at a moderate to vigorous intensity. You will be motivated to implement more physical activity into your daily live for a period of three years. Additionally, you will be asked to complete questionnaires (yearly, 90 minutes), smell tests (start and end of the study, 15 minutes) and smartphone tasks (every 6 weeks, 15 minutes), which can all take place from the comfort of your own home.
What are the benefits of participation?
Increased physical activity contributes to a healthier lifestyle. By participating, you will help advance knowledge about the effects of physical activity on future health risks in individuals with an LRRK2 or GBA1 genetic variant.
Are there any reimbursements?
You will not receive financial compensation for participation.
