All research institutes and research groups in the Netherlands are evaluated once every six years on the basis of the Standard Evaluation Protocol (SEP). Using this protocol, developed by the KNAW, NWO and VSNU, an external committee examined the research carried out by our research institutes RIHS and RIMLS, and the associated research themes in December of 2018. The assessment was performed in terms of research quality, relevance to society and viability. In doing so, they focused on the research carried out in the period 2012-2017. The final report including our reply has now been completed and published. It includes the evaluation, discusses the strengths of our research, but also gives insights in how we can improve ourselves in the future.

Research with impact

We can be very proud of the results achieved in this evaluation. The committee has indicated that it is impressed by the facilities made available, the high quality of our research, but also the impact that our research has on society.

"This evaluation shows that we are on the right track and that the quality of the research can really make a difference for society. In addition, excellent starting points of attention have been given for the coming years to maintain this quality and make it visible to the outside world. This provides a great opportunity to attract international researchers and to work on the diversity within the Radboudumc research environment.”, says Jan Smit, dean at the Radboudumc.

All the evaluated research themes have scored the qualification good to excellent in terms of quality, social impact and viability. Three research themes were even rated as excellent on all three domains by the committee: Infectious diseases and global health (under the direction of David Burger), Renal disorders (under the direction of Joost Hoenderop) and Urological cancers (under the direction of Tom Scheenen).  Meanwhile, the Committee also made suggestions for improvements in some themes, which are actively pursued.
