Sanne van Oosterhout student of BMS

Sanne van Oosterhout is a third-year student of Biomedical Sciences at Radboud University.

1 Who are you and what do you study?

My name is Sanne van Oosterhout and I am 21 years old. I'm studying Biomedical Sciences in Nijmegen. This academic year will be the third and final year of my Bachelor, in which I'll take minors and I'll be doing a placement. I am really looking forward to this!

2 Can you share why you chose this study?

For a very long time I wasn't sure what I wanted to study, because I am interested in so many different things. Learning about the human body has always appealed to me, but besides that I am also very much interested in human behaviour and communication. Additionally, I am passionate about transferring information, which is why I have always enjoyed providing education and exam training. My many interests haven't exactly made choosing a study any easier.

Biomedical Sciences seemed like the right choice, because among other things this programme allows me to apply my curiosity in a valuable way by, for instance, doing research. I am learning a lot about the human body, and with the new curriculum I am also learning something about human behaviour and communication. Besides that, there is elective space and free time to work on my other interests. By the way, I figured out quite quickly that I wanted to get a university degree, particularly to challenge myself and to build a broad foundation.

I had to repeat half of my first year at university, causing a one-year study delay. I wasn't ready for university yet. So many things were suddenly changing in my life: a new environment, new courses, new people, a new city. Besides that, as a perfectionist I was struggling to deal with large amounts of subject matter and studying materials. Interrupting my studies was the best choice I have made so far and has affected me positively. I have grown a lot, not only on a personal level but also in my studies. I have a clear vision of my goals now, which has made studying so much easier for me.

3 Do you have any ideas about your future as a professional yet? What do you hope to achieve with your studies?

My passion is transferring information to people, so that we can both use it. Whether it is teaching secondary school pupils, giving lectures to students, or giving advice to doctors, it gives me a lot of energy. It makes me feel like I am helping others directly, which is very valuable to me. That way I can get in touch and interact with others, which I value in any future job. I would love to combine this with my own research in the future. The programme trains me to become a researcher, which I also find very interesting and which is a great outlet for my curiosity and perseverance. However, I would never want to focus on research alone, precisely because transferring knowledge and information gives me so much energy. That is why combining the two appeals to me so much.

4 What do you expect from the Career Service as regards your future career and the job market?

To have somewhere I can ask any questions about placements or the future job market. To receive support and guidance about that. I expect them to have a lot of know-how and to be able to ask me the right questions when I am feeling stuck deciding, or unsure what to make of certain information.
